Key Veterans Benefits. The VA offers several burial allowances to help families with funeral costs, for veterans who pass away after October 1, 2024.

Veterans who have served our country deserve honor and recognition, even in death. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers several burial benefits designed to help families with funeral costs and ensure veterans receive the dignified farewell they earned through their service.

Key benefits include burial allowances that can help cover funeral, burial, and transportation costs. Veterans may also be eligible for a free burial in a national cemetery, which includes opening and closing of the grave, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate.

All eligible veterans receive a burial flag and may receive military honors. Headstones, markers, and medallions are available at no cost, even for private cemetery burials. Service-connected death benefits may apply when a veteran dies from a service-related condition.

Survivors should also be aware of the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) program, which provides monthly benefits to eligible survivors. Pre-planning and understanding these benefits in advance ensures families can fully utilize the support available to them.
