Raye Roy Hill, age 90, passed away on September 13, 2020 in Abilene, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at the Elmwood Memorial Funeral Home chapel on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at 2:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed by clicking on the link that says Video Access.
Mr. Hill was born on February 16, 1930 to James and Ada (Goodwin) Hill in Sugar Grove, Arkansas. Mr. Hill was the fraternal twin brother of Fay Foy Hill among a family of 10 children. He moved to Booneville, Arkansas with his family at the age of 15. He was a dominant offensive and defensive tackle on the Bearcat HS football team of 1948. In 1950 he moved to Flint, Michigan to work at General Motors’ Buick Motor Division where he was an active member of UAW Local 599 for 32 years. During one of his trips back to Arkansas he met the love of his life, Betty Ann Moore, whom he married on December 23, 1950. Soon after the marriage he was deployed with the United States Army to South Korea during the Korean War where he served at the rank of corporal as a medical corpsman and ambulance driver for an US Army MASH unit. After serving 18 months he was honorably discharged from the army and moved his bride to Michigan where they raised 5 children. After retiring from GM he worked in HVAC service and repair for Better Heating and later Burn’s Heating and Cooling of Mt. Morris, Michigan. Mr. Hill was an active member of the Churches of Christ where he served as a deacon and elder for several years. He also was very involved in coaching Little League Baseball teams for his 3 sons. After becoming a grandfather and great-grandfather he was very involved in their lives attending sporting events, concerts, and giving grandfatherly advice.
Mr. Hill is preceded in death by his parents, his 9 brothers and sisters, his wife (Betty), daughter (Rita), and son (Mel). He is survived by daughter Vickie Cardot (Joe) of Abilene, son Marvin (Margaret) of Lakeland, Florida, daughter in law Christy (Mel) of Boerne, Texas, son Roy of Punta Gorda, Florida, a number of nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
