Gerald Parker

Gerald ‘Gerry’ Lee Parker, 82, passed away on August 21, 2019, surrounded by his family in San Antonio, TX.

Gerry was born on October 28, 1936, in Mediapolis, Iowa, to Marian and Howard Parker. He joined the United States Air Force in 1955 and served with valor during the Vietnam conflict. During his four tours he flew C-130 planes into multiple theaters earning him numerous medals which include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. His time in the military was not something he always talked about, but he was proud to have served his country. He retired as a First Sergeant in 1984 after 29 years of service.

Following his military career, the family settled in Abilene, Texas. He married Joan Bryson in 1978. Gerry returned to school and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse and spent 15 years working at the Abilene State School lovingly caring for his patients.

Upon his retirement, Gerry and his Joan enjoyed spending time with their family. Gerry especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children.

Gerry is survived by his daughter, Julie, of San Antonio, TX, his son, John, of Abilene, TX, his grandchildren: Shane, Shon, Amanda, Jeremy, Martin, Holly, Faith, Ashlea, Robyn, JW, Justin, Joey and Sunny and many great-grandchildren, as well as two great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Nancy. Gerry is preceded in death by his wife, Joan, his mother, Marian, his father, Howard, his brother, Bill, his brother, Jim, his sister, Nancy, his sister, Janette, his step-son Ricky, and his son, Jeff.

The family would like to extend special thanks to his daughter, Julie, and the Seasons Alzheimer’s Care and Assisted Living in San Antonio for lovingly looking after him during his last years with us.

Visitation will be from 12:00pm to 2:00pm on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral services will immediately follow visitation.
