William Yates

William Alvie Yates, 93, of Abilene, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at his home.

Visitation for family and friends will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 12 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy. 277 South. Funeral service will be 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tina Cross and Lloyd Couch officiating; interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Alvie was born on September 12, 1914 in Redlands, Texas south of Taylor Co. to Henry Hardin and Alice G. Yates. He attended Abilene High School. He served in the U.S. ArmyAir force in the 449 Bomber Squad during World War II; flying over 50 missions in Italy. He married Mary B. Van Etten on June 29, 1941 in Abilene. Alvie, also known as Cotton, retired from Gooch Packing Co. after working there for 25 years. After retiring, he worked as a ball-gum distributor for 10 years, retiring again in 1986. He is a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary B. Yates; daughter, Alvilene Tatum and husband, Jim; son, Mike Yates; two granddaughters, Amy Clarke and husband, Scott, and Jeanne Tatum; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two bothers, and three sisters.

The Yates family gratefully acknowledges Carol of Chartwell Family Services and the dedicated staff of Hospice of the Big Country.
