Thomas Macke

June 27, 1944 — January 13, 2026

Thomas H. Macke entered peacefully into eternal life on January 13, 2026. Tom was born to S. J. and Dorothy Macke on June 27, 1944, in North Platte, Nebraska. Tom married his high school sweetheart, Diana Robinson, February 8, 1964. Their 62-year union was blessed with four children: one daughter Julie (Ronda), and three sons: Tom (Cheryl), Jim (Kristi), and Steve (Marsha). They were further blessed with 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Preceding Tom in death were his parents and three brothers, Doug (Francis) of Nebraska, Don (Sharon) of Abilene, and John Macke also of Nebraska, as well as two infant granddaughters and one infant grandson.

Tom had a longtime career as a conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired in 2004 with 35 years of accident-free service. A lifelong Catholic, Tom was very active in his parish community. In his younger years, he was an altar server. As an adult, he served on the parish council, as a catechist, and as a youth group leader. He also participated in the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Family Movement, Marriage Encounter, Men's group, Cursillo, and Teams of Our Lady. Tom, along with the absolute love of his life, Diana, volunteered as a delivery person with Meals on Wheels for over a decade. He specialized in bringing joyful conversation, along with a meal, to those that could not get out on their own.

Tom was also a heck of a little league coach when his children were younger. He spent many weekends at the ball field coaching, cheering, and encouraging a spirit of competition. His impact extended not only to his own children, but throughout the community. Tom was a huge fan of his beloved Notre Dame and he tried to never miss an opportunity to root for the Fighting Irish in every sport. "Grandpa Macke" had a heart of gold and a generous spirit that could make any day brighter with his comedic, loving personality and he will be missed by all those who loved him dearly.

A Mass of Christian Burial presided over by Reverend Reggie Odima, will be held at 11:00am, Saturday January 17th at St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church - 2525 Westview in Abilene. The Mass will be followed by a private family burial.
