Sarah Brooks

October 20, 1932 — December 14, 2022

Sarah Naoma Cagle Brooks was born in Opal, Arkansas on October 20, 1932, and died on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. Sara was one of two sets of twins born to Jacob and Edna Cagle, who would have a total of 9 children.
At age 14, Sarah met James Brooks, the love of her life, at the small soda shop where she worked, and on June 1, 1949, they wed when both were 16 years old. James joined the United States Air Force, and the couple eventually had 3 sons. After making their home in many places, they finally settled in Abilene upon James's retirement. While the boys were in school, and so she could be home when they were, Sarah worked in the AISD school lunchroom cooking and serving meals to children, something she loved doing. Sarah loved telling the story about how she got her driver's license: her oldest son Jesse, told her that he wouldn't get his license unless she'd study to get hers too - so she did, and she loved being able to drive for the first time as an adult!
Sarah was also an excellent seamstress, sewing for her son's weddings, and countless clothes and toys for grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If anything, needing altering, you took it to "Granny". For many years, Sarah faithfully taught preschool Sunday School at Southside Baptist Church in Abilene and there are precious memories of her practicing her felt board lessons on the floor with her grandchildren. Granny and Pops loved spoiling their grandchildren until they were old enough to go to school while their parents worked. She was dedicated to every child's need, and it was always a treat to go to Granny and Pops' house.
Sarah was proceeded in death by her parents; her dear grandson, James Weldon Brooks and all her siblings except her twin sister, Mary.
She is survived by her faithful and loving husband, James; and sons, James Jesse (Lanaee), of Merkel, TX, Carl Wesley (Missy), of Navarre, Florida, and Clayton Dale of Abilene, TX; and her 5 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 1:00pm-2:00pm, followed by funeral services at 2:00pm, on Tuesday December 20, 2022, at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South, Abilene, TX. Interment will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
