Ronald Downing

July 30, 1940 — October 17, 2024

Ronald David Downing Sr. gained his wings on October 17, 2024. He was born to Pete and Arrene Downing on July 30, 1940, the fourth of ten children. Growing up in Potosi, Texas, Ronnie embraced a hard-working life from a young age, helping his father on the farm. Whether driving tractors as soon as his feet could reach the pedals or plowing fields, Ronnie was no stranger to hard work, and that tenacity shaped every moment of his life.

Ronnie graduated from Eula High School, where he was active in basketball and the FFA, earning the title of FFA Beau. After high school, he built a family, welcoming four beautiful children-Ronda, Ronald, Kristi, and Brandon-while sustaining a successful career with Dowell Chemical for over several years. His entrepreneurial spirit eventually led him to pursue his dream of owning his own business, founding Liberty Cementers. Under Ronnie's leadership, Liberty Cementers flourished, showcasing the boundless drive and grit he was known for. But a tragic accident in the late 1970s shifted the course of his life.

Though the accident placed physical limits on Ronnie, it could never touch his unshakable spirit. His love for his family, sharp wit, and tireless work ethic never wavered. He was a dessert connoisseur and Moon Pie Enthusiast. He found joy in woodworking, gardening, and caring for his loyal dog, Romeo. Even in these later years, he continued to live fully, thanks in part to the exceptional care he received from the staff at Tangram Rehabilitation Center, where he spent more than 15 years. Though Ronnie faced new boundaries, he knew no limits. His strength of character allowed him to flourish, becoming a friend to many and the life of every gathering. Ronnie never met a stranger and was always ready to share a story-sometimes questionable, but always memorable.

In his later years, when his body faced new challenges, Ronnie moved to The Springs, where he was again blessed with compassionate and fulfilling care. His family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the incredible staff at both Tangram and The Springs, and to his lifelong nurses and caretakers, for their devotion and kindness throughout Ronnie's journey. You were more than caregivers-you became family.

As we remember Ronnie today, we honor a man who lived a truly remarkable life. From a farm boy in Potosi to a successful businessman, loving father, and cherished friend, Ronnie's story is one of perseverance, love, and an indomitable spirit. His family will forever remember him for his boundless strength, his unwavering determination, and the love he shared so freely with those around him. He touched the lives of many and left an imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ronnie is preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Arene Downing, his son, Ronald David Downing Jr., and his sister, Gail Post.
