Maxine Matthews

April 2, 1928 — May 30, 2021

Maxine Matthews went home to be with Jesus on Sunday May 30th, 2021 in Abilene Texas at the age of 93.

Visitation will be at Elmwood Funeral Home, Sunday June 6, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

Graveside Services for the family will be on Monday at the Texas Veterans Cemetery.

Maxine was born and raised in Fredericksburg, Texas. Upon graduation from high school, she moved to San Antonio to work at Frost Bank and met a young airman in 1950. Maxine married that airman, Jim, in 1951 and started her life as a military spouse. The final military assignment for the family was Abilene, Texas in 1964 where they settled for good. Maxine had a successful career at the Bank of Commerce and retired as an Assistant Vice President. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Charles Moritz Sr and Rosa Née Burg

6 Brothers - Clements, Lawrence, Felix, Charles Jr, Frank and her twin brother Max

And 2 sisters - Ruth and Josephine

Grandson SRA Matthew Kennedy

Survived by her husband and best friend of 69 years James (Jim) Matthews.

Michael and wife Terri Matthews

Sandra and husband Bubba Winchester

David and wife Sherry Matthews all of Abilene

Grandchildren include Nathan (spouse Chenoa), Hannah, Jenni (spouse Jason), Shari (spouse Colby), Naomi (spouse Wayne), Kevin (spouse Brandi) and Jennifer (spouse James).

Also 19 great grandchildren, 11 “great-great” grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations in Maxine’s honor may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
