Mary Nell Johnson Elliott passed away March 26, 2026 in Abilene, Texas. A visitation will be 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 31, 2026 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South. The funeral service will follow to begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mary Nell Johnson Elliott was born to Hershel and Ada Lucille (Blanks) Johnson on June 22, 1937. She was born into a wonderful family with two brothers, Dalton Johnson and Bobby Johnson. Nell, as she was known to most, grew up in the Caps community and was a lifetime member of the Caps Baptist Church. She attended Butterfield Elementary School and later graduated from Abilene High School. She married George W. Elliott, Jr. on March 27, 1954. The couple had 3 sons: Gary Don, David Alan, and Ronnie Lee.
Nell worked in the Business Office at Hendrick Medical Center for over 30 years. She was beloved by her coworkers. Having been brought up on a farm, she learned to cook the best pies, cakes and dishes made from scratch. She started making her own clothes when she was just 13. Later she made clothes for her grandchildren, especially for her granddaughter who liked frilly dresses. Nell fell in love with hummingbirds on a trip to Colorado where she discovered hummingbird feeders, and to this day you can see feeders outside her house. She also loved gardening and was always working on a house project that involved painting or refinishing furniture. Her greatest joy was being a grandmother to Greg and GiNell. They loved being in the country with Grandma and Grandpa. They rode bikes together, raised puppies, rabbits, goats, and the like.
Nell was preceded in death by her parents, Hershel and Ada Lucille Johnson, her husband, George W. Elliott, Jr.; her eldest son, Gary Don Elliott, and her beloved grandson Gregory Mendel Elliott; her two brothers, Dalton Johnson and Bobby Johnson. She is survived by her two sons, David (Mary) Elliott and Ronnie Elliott; former daughter-in-law Grace Jones; her granddaughter, GiNell (Adam) Elliott-Joyce; nieces Diane Beaver, Michelle Collier; nephews Dwain Larry, and Todd Johnson, and Randall Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to Love and Care Ministries, 233 Fannin Street A, Abilene, TX 79603.
