Jurgen Doscher Jr.

January 5, 1921 — October 3, 2008

J. Henry Doscher was born in Houston, Texas on January 5, 1921, a 5th generation from that city, and passed away on October 3, 2008 in an Abilene hospital.

He received his BA from Amherst College, graduating in 1942 and later enlisted in the Navy, commissioned an ensign and served for 32 months in the Pacific. After discharge, he attended the University Of Texas School Of Law earning a LLB degree in 1948. He moved to Abilene, which became his hometown, to join the Wagstaff, Harwell, and Alvis law firm in 1950, became a partner in 1951 and left in 1966 to go into private practice. After retiring from his practice, he became a professor at McCurry University, teaching Business Law for 27 years. In 1994-1996 he wrote two books about the war in the Pacific. He spent many hours answering email from his related web-site, literally from around the world, of those interested in that period of history.

Mr. Doscher believed in helping others, establishing funds to aid those of his hometown when the Community Foundation of Abilene was created in the 1980s. He has funded scholarships at the University Of Texas School Of Law, the University of Houston and at Amherst. Much of his estate will go to various charities.

He was very active in bridge, earning several times over his masters points. He traveled widely to play in tournaments, often with partners from the groups in Abilene. He was well and widely known in Abilene, and Austin, with a large circle of friends who will miss his unique sense of humor.

Mr. Doscher did not marry and is survived by his niece, Maynette Shearn More, of Austin Texas; his cousin, John Spence Hornbuckle of Houston, and his two children, Laura Christine and John Spence. Hornbuckle III. He will be missed greatly by them as well.

His memorial service will be held at The Church of the Heavenly Rest, Friday October 10th at 10 am; interment with full military honors provided by the U.S. Navy will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park.

He and his family request memorials be sent to a charity of choice, or to the Community Foundation of Abilene. The family offers its thanks to all those who cared for Mr. Doscher during the past few months. Your care and concern for his welfare is greatly appreciated.
