James (Jim) Paul McHargue, Jr. passed from this life on February 13th, 2024, at 102 years of age, in Abilene, TX. He was born on May 28th, 1921, in Tyrone, Oklahoma, to Eva Margaret Wiggins McHargue and James Paul McHargue, both preceding him in death. The McHargue family relocated to Midland, TX in 1935 during the dust bowl, and were well-known, long-time residents of the community.
Jim had a passion for aircraft and flying, beginning in his younger years, and continuing throughout his life, even obtaining his pilot's license before his driver's license. He was an avid, lifelong reader, with a love of history, was a ballroom dancer well into his 90s, and enjoyed singing in his church choir. He was a long-time resident of Abilene, and worked in the oil and gas industry for many years. He will be remembered as a true gentleman, a friend to many, and a lover of all cats.
He graduated from Midland High School in Midland, Schreiner Institute (now Schreiner University) in Kerrville, and attended the University of Texas in Austin. He served in the Army Air Corp during WW2, where his advanced skill and experience as a pilot were put to use as an instructor to help win the war.
He later married his beloved Lois May Lynch McHargue, and they had two children, James (Jimmy) Albert McHargue, and Laura Marie McHargue Lightner, all preceding him in death. He was also preceded in death by his younger sister, Lucille McHargue Graham, and his beloved, long-time companion Louise Horton of Ruidoso, NM.
He is survived by his three grandsons Timothy Huchton, his wife Rebecca, and their children Parker and Timothy; Paul Huchton, his wife Iris, and their children Everly and Finnley; and William Huchton. He is also survived by his sister, Muriel "Midge" McHargue Evans; brother Richard (Dick) McHargue and his wife Dolores; nieces Jan Thomas and her husband Jim, and Gloria Anne Graham; and nephews Richard Evans and his wife Lorna, Bill McHargue; Richard McHargue and his wife Susan, among many other beloved family and friends.
The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers with Gentiva Hospice and Chisholm Court in Abilene TX, for the love and care they have given to Jim.
