James was born on February 14, 1954, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to James McFerrin Sr. and Priscilla Samonte. He was a graduate of Cooper High School and spent his working years as a skilled mechanic, known for his strong work ethic and dedication to providing for his family. James truly could fix anything, a talent that made him a dependable friend and a trusted problem-solver.

In his free time, James loved fishing, hunting, shooting pool, golf, and swimming. He took great pride in teaching his children practical life skills, especially showing them how to change tires and oil. He was a great father who believed in teaching by example.

James was known for his direct nature and his quick wit. He had a sharp sense of humor and was a master of playful banter, but behind that was a man with the biggest heart. He forgave freely, loved deeply, and was generous with grace. Most of all, James loved Jesus and lived his life as a true man of God, sharing forgiveness and faith with everyone he met.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James McFerrin Sr., and Priscilla Samonte.
