Frank Thacker, 93, of Abilene, Texas, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025. A time of visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Elmwood Funeral Home, located at 5750 Hwy 277 South in Abilene. A celebration of Frank’s life will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 27, 2025, in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park.
Frank was born on October 28, 1931, in Prattville, Alabama to Francis and Gracie Thacker. A proud patriot, Frank joined the United States Air Force, where he built a rewarding and distinguished career working in Bomb Nav for the B-52 aircraft. His professional expertise gave birth to the com/navigation and electric warfare sectors of heavy maintenance. His service eventually brought him to Dyess Air Force Base, where he would later retire with honor.
On June 1, 1969, Frank married the love of his life, Doris Rister. Together, they built a life grounded in love, commitment, and shared adventures. After his retirement from the Air Force, Frank pursued a successful second career in real estate in the Abilene area, remaining active and engaged in the community he loved.
Frank had a passion for the simple joys in life. He loved a good round of golf, a competitive game of bowling, and never missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune or The Price is Right. A creature of habit, he cherished his daily newspaper and enjoyed winding down with his favorite Seagram’s.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Harrelson; his wife, Doris Thacker; granddaughter, Courtney Ballard; daughter, Debi Ballard; his parents, Francis and Gracie Thacker; his brothers, Roger Thacker, Brady Thacker, Lamar Thacker, and Verlon Thacker.
Frank is survived by his son, Danny Kennedy; his grandchildren, Brian Harrelson, Kevin Harrelson, Jason Harrelson, Danny Kennedy Jr, Chelsea Ballard; nine great grandchildren, Cheyenne Carpenter, Dakota Fraser, Madison Russey, Bailey West, Emily Kennedy, Kaylee Harrelson, Kassidy Harrelson, Brooklyn Harrelson, and Kennedy Harrelson; three great great grandchildren, Waylon Russey, Eva Karst, Jaxson Duncan; his sister, Shirley Lewis; and his great nephew, Andrew Cowart.
Frank will be remembered for his warm heart, sharp mind, and the unwavering love he had for his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of service, loyalty, and kindness that will not be forgotten.
