David Mangum

David Levone Mangum Jr., age 72, passed away on May 12, 2024, in Abilene, Texas. A visitation will be 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South.  The funeral service will begin at 9:30 AM, on Friday, May 17, 2024 in the Elmwood Funeral Home’s Chapel. Interment will follow in Texas State Veterans Cemetery.

He was born on March 16, 1952, in Louisburg, North Carolina to David and Isabella Mangum. After completing high school at Goldsand, David dedicated himself to serving his country by joining the United States Air Force. Through his service, he was stationed in Abilene, Texas, which would become his beloved home.

In Abilene, David committed his life to serving the community as a firefighter for the City of Abilene. His dedication to protecting others and ensuring the safety of his fellow citizens was unwavering. Alongside his firefighting career, David also ran his own landscaping service, showcasing his passion for cultivating beauty and nurturing growth in every aspect of his life.

Beyond his professional endeavors, David found joy in simple pleasures such as landscaping and fishing. He was known for his strong work ethic, always approaching tasks with determination and a servant's heart. His kindness and compassion touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, Lena Mae, Larry Mangum, and Tommy Mangum; his late wife, Debra K Mangum; and two grandmothers, Eula Mangum, and Maggie Williams. 

David is survived by his wife, Young Millei; his two sons, David Mangum III, and Dee Mangum; his grandson, Conner Mangum; eight siblings, Barbara Stancil and husband Tom, Joyce Harris, Ozell Mangum and wife Cathy, Jackie Williams and husband Jessie, Yolanda Mangum, Debra Mangum, Leveta Smith and husband Donald, and Stacy Mangum; one uncle, Kintchen Williams; one aunt, Bertha Taylor; one great uncle, Russell Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

David Levone Mangum Jr. will be remembered for his big heart, his dedication to serving others, and his love for his community. He leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of selflessness and hard work. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the honor of crossing paths with him.
