Clifton Coe

July 21, 1928 — December 2, 2008


Clifton Alvin Coe, beloved Father of Sharon Lea Godsey, and Grandfather of Christopher Lynn Hatcher and Leslie Renee Nielsen, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at a local hospital. He was 80 years young.

His funeral service with Pastor David Black of First United Methodist Church officiating will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 6th at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South, with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home.

Alvin was born the son of Willie Love and Edith Irene Coe on July 21, 1928 in Stamford, Texas. He joined the Air Force on January 10, 1947 and served his country proudly until 1950. On September 2nd of that year, Alvin married Betty Lou Shrum in Stamford before moving to Abilene in 1952. She preceded him in death on February 10, 1999.

Alvin was an avid musician who loved playing bass guitar and singing the classics of the Country and Western genre. He was a member of L.C. Agnew the Dixie Playboys for 15 years during the 1950s through the early 70s, and he continued to sit in with numerous area bands throughout the 1980s and early 90s. Singer Ray Price was one of Alvins biggest musical influences.

Along with his wife, Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Alton and Bill.

He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Godsey and her husband John; his sister, Lona Cole and her husband, Loren of Pearland; two grandchildren, Chris Hatcher and his wife Cindy, and Leslie Nielsen and her husband, Justin; three great grandchildren, Catelyn Hatcher, Christopher Tyler Hatcher, and Alissa Godsey; and companion, Eddie Faye Clifford of Canyon Lake.

Pallbearers will be Chris Hatcher, John Godsey, Justin Nielsen, Curtis Caffey, L.C. Agnew and Jim Sturrock.

Memorial donations are suggested to the American Heart Association or to donors favorite charity.
