Brendan Joseph O’Neill, 63, of Abilene passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 30, 2020, at a local hospital following a brief illness.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, July 10, 2020 at 11 AM at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, TX.

Brendan was born on February 9, 1957, in Tucson, Arizona to Joseph O’Neill and Alice Zandanel O’Neill. He married the love of his life, Melissa Varley O’Neill on May 31, 1997. Brendan was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Brendan served his country honorably in the US. Navy. After his military retirement, he earned his bachelor’s degree as a Registered Nurse at UT Austin and worked several years in the ICU and Emergency Room. Brendan decided to expand his knowledge and return to school, earning a master’s degree in biology, minoring in education, while simultaneously earning his degree in anesthesia from the New Britain School of Anesthesia. He then worked for many years at his dream job as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist until the time of his passing, touching the lives and hearts of many along the way.

He enjoyed working on model airplanes and trains. He loved animals, especially cats and dogs, frequently volunteering at the Taylor Jones Humane Society, lovingly supporting his wife Melissa, and her dedication to helping the helpless.

Brendan is survived by his loving wife, Melissa O’Neill; mother, Alice O’Neill; brothers, Gregory O’Neill (Shari), Patrick O’Neill (Grayce), Dennis O’Neill (Dawn) and Daniel O’Neill (Jackie); numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph O’Neill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Brendan’s honor may be made to the Taylor Jones Humane Society, 2301 N. 3rd, Abilene, TX, 79603.
