Billie Jean Johnson was born on April 21, 1924, in Kamay, Texas, to Middleton Thomas and Myrtle Darnell Buck. On June 22, 2026, at the remarkable age of 102, she peacefully entered the presence of the Savior she had loved and faithfully served throughout her life.

Billie had a beautiful smile that greeted those she met. She was open, friendly, and never met a stranger. She loved to laugh, loved beautiful shoes, loved a little sparkle and bling, and never turned down chocolate or a bowl of ice cream. She once said that the secret to her longevity was a daily Dr. Pepper. Those simple joys were part of her charm and made everyone around her smile.

Above all else, Billie loved two things-her Lord and her family. She was married to John Bradfield Shugart, Jr., with whom she was blessed with four children. Later in life, she married Lawrence Glen Johnson with whom she gained two daughters and shared 44 wonderful years of marriage. She treasured every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Her family was one of God's greatest blessings in her life, and she delighted in watching generation after generation grow.

Music was the language God gave Billie to serve Him. For decades, the piano was her ministry. She faithfully served as church pianist in congregation after congregation, not simply playing notes on a page, but leading hearts into worship. Anyone who heard her play remembers it. Her hymns were never ordinary. They were filled with emotion, passion, joy, and a style all her own. She could make familiar songs come alive, and through her music she quietly pointed people toward Christ.

As the years passed, when she was no longer sitting at the piano bench each Sunday, she found another place to serve-lifting her voice in the church choir. Church was never just somewhere Billie attended. It was where she worshiped, served, loved others, and invested her life.

Her faith was not reserved for Sunday mornings. As a devoted Christian, Billie faithfully attended Baptist churches wherever life took her. She did not simply believe the Gospel-she lived it. Her children, grandchildren, and every generation that followed saw a woman whose life reflected her love for Jesus. She spoke openly about her faith because she wanted those she loved to know the same hope and assurance she had found. If Billie could stand before us one more time, she would want to tell us about Jesus. She would remind us that eternal life is not earned but received as God's gracious gift through His Son. She would point us to John 3:16:

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."

That verse wasn't simply one Billie knew-it was the message she lived.

Billie leaves behind a family who will forever be shaped by her example. She is survived by her children: Jo Ellen Barnhouse, Ann Shugart Langford, Barbara Jean McGraw, Gary Paul Shugart (Ida), Vonda Fox (Bill), and Jenny Johnson.

She also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren: Annette Baldwin (Wes), Brenda Crump (Bill), John Barnhouse (Jennifer), Mary Gonzalez (Angel), Greg Spence (Rochele), Kim Wiginton (Mike), Ken Langford (Michele), Nick Langford (Emily), Jacob Langford, John McGraw (Ruthie), Matt McGraw (Lauren), Caleb Fox (Brennan), Alison Carnahan (Jerry), and Andra Sessions (Ryan).

Her legacy continues through twenty-seven great-grandchildren: Jeffrey Baldwin (Janessa), David Baldwin, Joshua Crump, Elizabeth Beck (Nathan), Julia Barnhouse, Michelle Albrecht (David), Blake Brittain (Brady), Alyssa Gonzalez, Aiden Gonzalez, Sam McDaniel, Rachel Wiginton, Nicole Langford, Natalie Langford, Kaiden Langford, Charly Grace McGraw, Avy McGraw, Macie McGraw, Harper McGraw, Joseph Udensi McGraw, Grayson McGraw, Katelyn Carnahan, Mack Carnahan, Wimberly Carnahan, Deckard Sessions, Tatum Sessions, Taylor Knudsen, and Aubrey Knudsen; and four great-great-grandchildren: Isabella Barnhouse, Dean Albrecht, Lilah Gabrielsen, and Ayda Albrecht.

Billie was welcomed into heaven by her beloved husband, Larry Johnson; her parents, Middleton and Myrtle Buck; her brother, Bryan Buck; her sons-in-law, Lawrence Barnhouse, Richard Langford, and John McGraw; her grandson, Lowe Spence; and her great-grandson, Jonathan Baldwin.

For those who knew Billie, there is comfort in imagining heaven today. Surely there is a piano nearby and the hymns are being played with the same joy, passion, and unmistakable style that blessed so many on earth. While our hearts grieve, we do not grieve without hope. Billie's race is finished. Her faith has become sight. The hands that faithfully played hymns of worship for so many years are now raised before the throne of the One she adored all her life. Her greatest desire was that every person she loved would one day join her there. Until that day, we give thanks for a life beautifully lived-a life of devotion, faithfulness, music, love, and grace-and we rejoice that her song continues in eternity.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Billie's life during visitation on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Highway 277 South, Abilene, Texas. A funeral service and burial will immediately follow from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the same location.
