Dorothy Mae Spears, 84, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 11, 2008 in Abilene. Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 17th at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Viewing and visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM on Wednesday at Elmwood Funeral Home.

Dorothy was born on June 13, 1924 in Taylor, Texas where she was raised as a Lutheran on the family farm. She was proud of her Czechoslovakian heritage and spoke Czech fluently, only learning English after beginning elementary school. After high school she worked as an administrative assistant at Randolph A.F.B where she met and married Lt. Donald Edward Spears on January 6, 1951. Donalds 33 year Air Force career took the family all over the world with a final assignment at Dyess Air Force Base where he retired in 1979. Dorothy chose to stay home to take care of the children and the home before spending 15 years working along side her youngest son David at Federated Insurance. Dorothy loved to dance and often recalled the fun she had when she got to Polka with Lawrence Welk when he came to Abilene.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Donald Edward Spears of Abilene; her children, Donald Edward Spears II and wife Elaine of Joshua, Deborah Piercefield and husband Rick of Ft. Worth, and David Michael Spears and wife Rhonda of Abilene; six grandchildren, Cynthia Denise Rogan and husband Mark, Jennifer Christine Bryant and husband Michael, David Joseph Piercefield and wife Melinda, Amber Renee Smith, Austin Jay Piercefield and Tyler Jacob Spears; she has five great grandchildren, Dakota Keller, Brett Rogan, Autumn Bryant, Emma Bryant and Nevaeh Smith. They will all miss her.

Her parents, Joseph C. Dlouhy and Albina Safarek Dlouhy and four siblings preceded her in death.

You were a beautiful lady of God here on Earth and He has now chosen to have you as one of His angels there in Heaven. I will miss you more than words can say or more than my heart can ever express but I know you are at peace and that you are watching over me and my family and smiling upon us. And those stories that we use to have to sit through and listen to will definitely be missed, so please whisper them to me in my dreams, okay I love you and you will be with me always.
    Your loving granddaughter, Jennifer

    Jennifer and family,
My heart is sad for you because I know the hurt you feel with the physical loss of your loved one. I recently lost my father after a 62 days in ICU. The hurt is still so fresh but in times like these, we have to place our faith and trust in God to get us through these difficult times. God is our refuge and strength and I pray today that He gives you peace that passes all understanding. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank God we have the promise of Heaven and that one day, we will see our loved ones again. God bless the Spears family.

And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

By His wounds, we are healed. Isaiah 53:5
