Our beloved Soldier and Son... Our Hero.

SGT. Reuben Marcus Fernandez III

Our soldier, son, brother, and dear loved one to many, was called Home on October 11, 2008, to be at peace and forever safe.

United States Army Sgt. Reuben Marcus Fernandez, III was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He was born November 6, 1985, in Abilene, to the late Reuben M. Fernandez, Jr. and Aurora Flores Fernandez. He was a 2004 graduate of Cooper High School. After graduating, he joined the United States Army, and had planned to make a career serving his country. Marcus was a brave young soul. He believed in his duty to our country and embraced the duty of a soldier. He served a complete tour in Iraq in 2006 and was serving a second tour that began in June 2008. He recently reached the rank of United States Army Sergeant.

Marcus was all smiles and all heart. His eyes spoke to everyone; there was no need for words. Those same eyes were happy as a child, laughing as a growing young man, and deep when he became a soldier. His laughter was infectious. Marcus was a friend to everyone. He was a happy and spirited soul. Marcus touched many lives.

Our brave soldier is survived by his mother, Aurora Flores Fernandez; his youngest sister, Stephanie Fernandez, of Lubbock and Candice Fernandez, of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by his grandparents Mr. Mrs. Reuben Fernandez, Sr.; his seven aunts, Lupe Loza, Carmela Nieto, Alicia Flores, Sandy Martinez, all of Abilene, Olivia Flores, of Arlington, Tx, Martha Flores, Mary Nieto, both of Mesquite: his uncles, Albert Flores, Joe Flores, Sr., Salome Flores, Rudy Fernandez, Robert Fernandez all of Abilene; and several cousins.

He is preceded in death by his father, Reuben M. Fernandez, Jr.; his uncle,

Miguel Flores, Jr. and his grandparents, Miguel Flores, Sr. and Julia Leyva Flores.

He was a loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, and cousin. Marcus, our Hero, we miss you already, you will be loved always and forever.

I just wanted to let you know how great of a man Marcus was. I knew him very well in high school and we had just recently gotten back in contact in the last 6 months. Its still so unreal to me that hes gone. I know theres nothing that anyone can do or say to make it better. I just wanted to let you know that Marcus will be missed by more people than you could ever imagine, he made a great impact on this world and will never be forgotten.

Fernandez was one of the better soldiers in todays Army.
When he had a task, he accomplished it without question, he was dedicated to the mission, and his duties.

Im gonna miss him chilling in our tent every night.
and just seeing him around the FOB, waiting to roll out on a mission.
I dont think there is any better way to go out, then to go out serving your country for the people you love.

our prayers are to his mother and sister he left behind.
hopefully SGT. Reuben Marcus Fernandez III and his father will guard the gates of heaven and wait for us to get up there.

    We wont forget him.

There is truly no other sacrifice than the life of such an unselfish, giving soul. We all take for granted the goodness and prosperity that we as Americans have every day and we only have them because of the ultimate gift these individuals gave to us. LET US NOT TAKE FOR GRANTED THE SACRIFICE MARCUS MADE FOR YOU AND I. It is very obvious that HE was such a strong individual because of the guidance he had growing up. From one mother to his, THANK YOU for raising such a wonderful human being and please know that although he is not here physically, HE IS STILL WITH YOU everyday. Much love and appreciation.

My condolences to the Fernandez family. As a Patriot Guard Rider, I have attended many of these funerals, and they never get easy. Please know that all the Patriot Guard Riders feel your pain. We have gold star members, blue star members and active duty. But we will never let these heroes receive the type of homecoming that Vietnam Vets received. Please know that we ride in respect and honor of your fallen hero.

    To the Fernandez Family:

We have never met, but yet we share a bond. My son serves in Iraq and not only was in the same company as Reuben, but was a friend of his. His last memory of Reuben was some laughs they shared only a few hours earlier. I know that from speaking to my son, he is saddened beyond words at the great loss of his friend and comrade. Even though I never had the privilege of personally knowing your young man, my heart is heavy for you at your great loss. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and that tears have been shed for you.

    With my Deepest Sympathy
    Mary McCullar Lawrence

  35. Kathy Wade Lindsay

To the Family of Ruben Ferandez:

My family is so sorry to hear about the loss of your young man. Our son too, is deployed to Iraq with the 1st Cav.4th IDFort Hood. We believe he had the privilege of honor guard for the team that gave your son his send off back to home. I know that our son did this with both deep pride and tremendous sorrow.

I now that you have heard all too many times that words cannot express how sorry we are for your loss. We lost a son in February to a very tragic car accident and know the loss you have suffered will leave such a hole in your lives. Keep in sight on the wonderful memories you have and hold tightly to the ones that remain.

It is with very heavy heart that we offer these few word to let you know how sorry we are and how proud we are of all of our service men and women. Thank you for the huge sacrifice you have made and may God be with you.

    With warmest regards,

    Kathy Lindsay

I feel truely blessed to have known such a great person in my lifetime. Lil Dude was a hilarious prankster, devoted friend, and a die hard patriot. He was the Soldier you could always count on to accomplish the mission and the friend you could always count on to keep you feeling positive in the worst of times. I am honored to have trained him and to have served beside him. I watched him blossom from a young Private into a confident leader. We have all lost a great son, brother, and comrad with the passing of Ruben Lil Dude Fernandez. We will miss your confident smile and playful pranks, and will always have love for you. Never Forget
